Good morning, crowd,
The Single Best Signal You Can Use to Spot Real Investment Opportunities
Jose here.
Friday edition is going to be about clear examples of how to spot winners and examples of real case studies.
This week, I'm teaching you the one thing that separates investors who make money from investors who lose it. And then I'm showing you a real company that hit all the signals perfectly.

Profound
This is the stuff nobody talks about.
Let's fix that.
SPONSORED OF THE DAY
You Don't Have to Guess When, Only Which Way
That's a perp. No expiry, no rollover fees, no options complexity. Just a straight trade on direction, held as long as you want it. $90T trades on this market offshore every year. just made it the first legal, CFTC-regulated version in the US.
Using leverage increases risk of loss. Leverage is subject to the Firm's review and the customer's risk profile.
CASE STUDY
π― THE FRAMEWORK: WHEN TO ACTUALLY INVEST
Before you write a check to any startup, ask yourself three questions. If you get three "yes" answers, you've found something worth looking at.
Question 1: Is There a Timing Window That's Opening NOW (and Will Close)?
The company solves a problem that didn't exist 18 months ago, or the problem has just become urgent.
Bad timing: "We help teams organize files better." (This problem has existed forever. No urgency.)
Good timing: "AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) are capturing search traffic. Brands have zero visibility into what these AI systems are saying about them. Starting July 2026, new regulations require disclosure. This window is open for maybe 24 months, then everyone figures it out."
See the difference? One is evergreen. The other is time-sensitive.
Question 2: Is the Market Size Growing (Not Shrinking)?
You don't need the biggest market. You need one that's expanding fast.
Example: Search engine optimization (SEO) has been stagnant for years. Everyone knows how it works. But Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? It's literally a new category. Search budgets are shifting to AEO. Marketing teams are hiring AEO specialists. New tools are selling for $50K-$100K per year. The market is growing 3-4x YoY.
That's the signal. Growth acceleration. Not just sizeβtrajectory.
Question 3: Can You Measure Unit Economics?
You need to understand: How much does it cost to acquire a customer? How much revenue do they generate? How long do they stay?
Bad: "We're growing really fast, and we're confident we'll be profitable." (You have no idea. This is hope, not math.)
Good: "CAC is $8,000. LTV is $35,000. Payback period is 9 months. Churn is 2% monthly. This scales." (You can actually model this. You know the math works.)
If a founder can't explain their unit economics, they don't know their business. Walk away.
π° THE REAL EXAMPLE: PROFOUND (SEED TO $1B IN 18 MONTHS)
Now let me show you a company that hit all three signals perfectly.

What They Do:
Profound built a dashboard for marketing teams to see how their brand appears across AI answer engines. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, and DeepSeek. All in one place.
Marketing director asks: "What is the AI saying about our company?" Before Profound, the answer was: "I have no idea. I can't see inside these systems."
After Profound: Dashboard shows brand mentions, sentiment, which sources the AI cites, and competitive position. One platform. Clear metrics.
π THE SIGNAL #1: TIMING WINDOW
August 2024 (Seed round, $3.5M from Khosla Ventures):
Answer engines weren't even a category. ChatGPT was mainly a chatbot. The idea that AI would become the primary search interface was still theoretical.
Fast forward to today (February 2026, Series C):
Gartner estimates 40% of enterprise search queries will go through AI answer engines by 2027 (was 5% in 2024). Marketing budgets are shifting. CMOs are panicking because they can't see their brand in AI results.
That 18-month window? It's closing. But Profound got there first.
Signal: β Timing window opened fast. Market shifted. Urgency is real.

π THE SIGNAL #2: MARKET GROWTH
The Numbers:
Seed (Aug 2024): $3.5M raised β Estimated post-money: $15-20M valuation
Series A (June 2025): $20M raised β Estimated post-money: $70-80M valuation
Series B (Aug 2025): $35M raised β Estimated post-money: $150-200M valuation
Series C (Feb 2026): $96M raised β $1B post-money valuation
18 months. From $15M to $1B.

Traded VC
Why? Because the entire marketing tech category is being rewritten. Search budgets (which were $40B+ annually in Google Ads) are fragmenting into: traditional SEO, paid search, social, and now AEO (Answer Engine Optimization).
Profound is the infrastructure of this new category.
Signal: β Market growth is explosive. The category is expanding, not disrupting. New budget allocation is happening.

π THE SIGNAL #2: MARKET GROWTH
The Numbers:
Seed (Aug 2024): $3.5M raised β Estimated post-money: $15-20M valuation
Series A (June 2025): $20M raised β Estimated post-money: $70-80M valuation
Series B (Aug 2025): $35M raised β Estimated post-money: $150-200M valuation
Series C (Feb 2026): $96M raised β $1B post-money valuation

18 months. From $15M to $1B.
New budget allocation is happening.
π’ THE SIGNAL #3: UNIT ECONOMICS
What Profound's Numbers Likely Look Like (based on SaaS benchmarks):
CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost): $8,000-$12,000 (enterprise sales, quarterly contracts)
LTV (Lifetime Value): $60,000-$80,000 (3-year customer lifetime, high retention in new categories)
LTV:CAC Ratio: 6:1 to 7:1 (well above the 3:1 minimum)
ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue): Estimated $20-25M by Feb 2026 (based on Series C momentum)
Churn: <2% monthly (early stage, switching costs are high, customers are sticky)
CAC Payback: 8-9 months (customers pay back acquisition cost in under a year)
Translation: Every dollar spent acquiring a customer comes back in 8-9 months. Then the customer generates profit for the remaining 27+ months of their lifetime.
That's the math that justifies mega-rounds.
Signal: β Unit economics work. This scales. Money math is clear.
π΅ THE ROI (IF YOU HAD INVESTED AT SEED)
Let me give you the real numbers.
If you invested $100,000 at Seed (August 2024):
Post-money valuation: ~$18M (rough estimate) Your ownership: ~0.55%
Today (February 2026, 18 months later):
Series C post-money valuation: $1B Your share value: ~$5.5M
Return: 55x (You turned $100K into $5.5M)
If you invested at Series A (June 2025):
Post-money valuation: ~$75M Your $100K ownership: ~0.13%
Today (Feb 2026, 8 months later):
Series C valuation: $1B Your share value: ~$1.3M
Return: 13x (You turned $100K into $1.3M in 8 months)
This is what winning looks like. Not 2-3x returns. This is venture-scale returns happening in 18 months.
π© THE RED FLAGS THEY AVOIDED
Profound hit all the signals, but they also avoided the things that kill startups:
They didn't:
β Have a vague product ("We use AI to help with... stuff")
β Claim to be in a shrinking market
β Hide their business model ("We'll figure out monetization later")
β Hire 200 people after seed funding
β Spend on vanity metrics (fancy office, marketing stunts)
They did:
β Solve a specific problem (AI visibility)
β Enter a growing market at the right time
β Show clear metrics (acquisition cost, retention, ARR)
β Build quickly with small teams
β Let the product and metrics speak
π WHAT THIS TEACHES YOU
For founders:
If your company hits all three signals (timing window, market growth, measurable unit economics), you can raise fast. Profound went Seed β Unicorn in 18 months because investors could see the math.
For investors:
Stop asking "Is this the next Uber?" Start asking:
Is the timing window opening right now?
Is the market growing, not disrupting?
Can I understand the unit economics?
If yes to all three, you've found something worth writing a check for.
For employees:
If you're choosing between joining a startup and taking a safe job, pick companies where all three signals are clear. Profound employees hired at Seed are probably worth $5-15M today (if they got equity).
That's not luck. That's math.
π‘ THE BIGGER PATTERN
Every mega-return follows this same pattern:
Market shifts β Timing window opens β New category emerges β Clear metrics show it's real β Capital floods in β Winners scale to unicorn status.
Right now, that's happening in:
Answer Engine Optimization (Profound already won this one)
Defense tech (Quantum Systems $1.2B)
AI infrastructure (Together AI $800M, SambaNova $1B)
Robotics (Queue $12.6M, hardware accelerating)
Healthcare automation (multiple mega-rounds)
If you spot a company that:
Solves a problem that emerged in the last 18 months
Operates in a market growing 3x+ YoY
Shows unit economics that actually work
...you're looking at a potential Profound-style win.
π― YOUR ACTION ITEM THIS WEEK
Look at your current portfolio or deals you're considering. Score each one on the three signals:
Timing Window: Is the market moment NOW? (Yes = 1 point) Market Growth: Is the TAM expanding? (Yes = 1 point) Unit Economics: Are the numbers clear and positive? (Yes = 1 point)
3 points = Write the check 2 points = Due diligence deeper 1 point = Pass 0 points = Run
If you're evaluating opportunities with us at Founderscrowd, this is exactly how we filter. This is why our Premium members get access to deals like Schmidt Brothers, Anduril, Queue, and companies about to hit the inflection point.
That's what access to good capital looks like.
Hunt accordingly. β

ONE QUICK NOTE: Profound just announced new agents that help marketers respond to AI visibility gaps automatically. They're moving from "monitoring" to "acting." That's the sign a company is maturing from tool to platform. Watch for it in your portfolio companies. When they move from reports to actions, valuations usually spike.
